Post-Vasectomy Instructions

Vasectomy Discharge Instructions

INCISION CARE

  1. No showering or bathing for 48 hours after the surgery.
  2. Leave the dressing on for 48 hours (you may put a clean dressing on if desired, or if you have discomfort from your clothes rubbing against the incision).
  3. Wear a scrotal support for at least three days (if it feels comfortable, wear the support for one week).
  4. Keep ice around the scrotum for the first 24 hours after surgery to keep the swelling down.
  5. Sutures will dissolve on their own and do not require removal.

ACTIVITY

  • No heavy lifting (greater than 10 pounds), strenuous exercise, or sexual activity for one week.

SEMEN SPECIMENS

  • Following the vasectomy procedure, we require two post-vasectomy specimens that can be brought into the office. The first specimen should be brought to the office in one of the provided specimen cups, 8 weeks and 20 ejaculations after the vasectomy procedure was performed. The sample needs to be in the office within four hours of it being collected. The second sample should be brought into the office 2-4 weeks later.
